Entrepreneurs Over 50 - Roddy Campbell
Failure is a very big worry in people's minds – most people are scared of it not working. That never changes, so you need to be not scared.
At the age of 55, Roddy Campbell and a friend set up a new kind of business called Vrumi, which allows people in London who work during the day, to rent out their homes as workspaces while they are out.
The idea occurred to Roddy about 20 years ago, when he was working from home. He had a neighbour in his apartment block who would go out every day to work, but while he was out, a singing teacher came in to use the flat-owner’s piano to give singing lessons to pupils.
This made quite an impression on Roddy, not just because of the noise, but because of the intelligence and resourcefulness behind it. The idea would continue to brew for many years until 2014, when Vrumi came about. The acronym stands for “Very Restless Unemployed Man Idea”. A few months after Roddy and his friend set up the business, they had five employees!
Vrumi is a fantastic new platform that allows people to rent out their homes as office space while they are out at work.

The two men knew what they were capable of, but they were also able to recognise places they were lacking, especially regarding knowledge of technology and the internet. One thing they could not do was build a website of their own, so they asked someone they knew to do it for them.
This year, the plan is for Vrumi to launch in the rest of the UK.
