A good leader is goal-oriented. When a problem comes up, the best way to lead your team through it is to focus on finding a solution, rather than getting bogged down in the problem itself.
Melanie Duncan - from perfume shop assistant to serial entrepreneurI vowed never to have to ask permission to live my life ever again From her first job as a perfume shop assistant to owning several multi million pound businesses, Melanie Duncan has had quite a journey! Melanie was always shy as a child and as a young girl. But when she started to work in a perfume shop at the age of sixteen, her confidence started to come out as she learned to be more assertive. It took a while, but as she started to learn slowly how people tick, and how they respond to certain ways of talking, she became skilled at her job. Though she was good at what she did, she knew that this was not forever. Often, what pushes us towards change is something uncomfortable happening that forces you to reconsider where you are. For Melanie, that was when her boss almost did not allow her time off to visit her boyfriend’s family for the first time! This was a small seed towards what she would later become, and towards living the kind of life she wanted. In university, she studied Organisational Psychology, which is the study of how people behave in business. Her thesis was all about the large part emotions play in what people decide to buy. Her first step into business was in the second year of university, when Melanie and her boyfriend Devin launched a clothing line inspired by Greece. They started by making sweatshirts in a garage after lectures at the end of each day. It took a long time to get the business off the ground, but over a year later, online marketing was their final attempt.
This led to Melanie and Devin learning lots more about online business and marketing, which caused their business to thrive like never before. Years later, after starting seven more fashion, home decor and related businesses, Melanie started to move into the education and coaching space. Today, her specialism is in online marketing. Check out her website, her blog, and all the great stuff she is involved in, and get inspired! http://www.melanieduncan.com/about/ Operations is one of the subjects we cover in our new course content. A good leader does not take all the credit for the success of a business. Though you may be the driving force behind your business, make sure you recognise the part each person in your team has played in order to get there. Nothing boosts morale like positive reinforcement. And higher morale always leads to higher motivation to do the best job… This wednesday, take a look at Coco’s Tea Party, a truly beautiful blog by Ella Gregory, who has been blogging since the age of 16!
